A neuroscientist debunks myths about "rawdogging boredom" and explains how avoiding phone stimulus activates the brain's default mode network.

Things that are NOT true about rawdogging boredom 👇🏼 1. “It resets your dopamine/baseline (aka a ‘detox’)” — this is not true! You can’t “fast” from dopamine or flush it out of your system. 2. “You must clear your mind” — nope! Being with a wandering mind is part of the intention. PS — raw-dogging is not the same at meditation (from what I’m finding online.. remember I didn’t make this up 😅). Raw-dogging is more about enduring boredom vs having a structured visualization or breathing practice that you might be doing in meditation. That being said, meditation is such a broad word and has such a vast definition that for some people this may be what meditation looks like. 3. “Longer is always better for your brain” / “you need to do it for an hour+ to count” — nada! For some people this activity can actually be counter-productive and lead to rumination if not done with intention and safety. For some starting with 5-10 minutes is the best move. —if you want to learn more about my system and routine that helps you regulate your nervous system and rewire your brain so you can take back your focus, productivity, and step into the life you’ve been dreaming of comment the word “ROUTINE.” Folks in the video: @productive.rowan @datadrivenkt

If rid of this trend where people are raw-dogging boredom in order to become more productive, increase their attention spans, and improve their overall lives, here's the neuroscience behind why this works from a neuroscientist. Raw-dogging boredom simply means that you're allowing yourself to be bored for a certain amount of time without exposing your brain to micro-reward stimulus like your phone. The first thing this is doing for your brain is activating what's called your default mode network, or your DMN. This is the part of your brain that lights up when your mind wanders. Studies have found that allowing your mind to wander improves your performance on problem-solving tasks and increases your creativity. The second thing is when you're constantly using stimulus like checking your phone throughout the day, it's training your brain's reward system to expect frequent little hits of dopamine, and that makes your attention consistently drift toward getting that fix in. But raw-dogging helps train your brain to not need as many little dopamine hits and then it's okay and safe to not put your attention toward that. But the good news is you don't need to raw-dog for hours a day like you're seeing online. I have a proven system and routine that helps you regulate your nervous system and take back control of your productivity, your attention, and help you step into your best life. Comment the word routine below and I'll send you over how to get started.
