Video of the Étretat coastline cliffs and arches, paired with Monet paintings of the same views from the 1880s.
I totally get why Monet kept coming back here
Monet first visited Étretat in 1864 and returned many times over the years. Between 1883 and 1885, he painted around 90 works inspired by this coastline, capturing the cliffs, arches and sea again and again🌊
What I love is that he kept painting the same places, but they never looked quite the same. Different light, weather and time of day completely changed the scene🌥️
And standing there myself, looking at the same cliffs he painted over 140 years ago, I can definitely understand the obsession😍
I think I even got a little obsessed myself. I couldn’t leave after the sun had already set, because the light kept changing, creating a different scene every few minutes. And during the day, when the wind picked up and the sea became wilder, or when the sun came through the clouds, giving the cliffs a new colour I had not seen before🌬️
I’m sure I’ll be back, because Étretat never stops surprising🥰
